Why Your RV Teak Shower Mat Doesn’t Need to Fit Snugly

One of the most common questions we hear is: “Should my RV teak shower mat fit snugly against the shower pan?” The short answer: no — and a slightly undersized mat is often the best choice.

Why a Little Space Helps

Teak shower mats are designed to sit on top of the shower pan, not lock tightly into it. Leaving a small gap around the edges encourages proper drainage and air circulation, helping the wood dry quickly after use. That airflow reduces the risk of standing water, mildew, and trapped odors beneath the mat — a big win for RV bathrooms where humidity spikes fast.

Teak Expands — So Don’t Force It

Teak is a premium hardwood valued for moisture resistance and durability, but it still expands and contracts slightly with changes in humidity and temperature.
