Why Your RV Teak Shower Mat Doesn’t Need to Fit Snugly

One of the most common questions we hear is: “Should my RV teak shower mat fit snugly against the shower pan?” The short answer: no — and a slightly undersized mat is often the best choice.

Why a Little Space Helps

Teak shower mats are designed to sit on top of the shower pan, not lock tightly into it. Leaving a small gap around the edges encourages proper drainage and air circulation, helping the wood dry quickly after use. That airflow reduces the risk of standing water, mildew, and trapped odors beneath the mat — a big win for RV bathrooms where humidity spikes fast.

Teak Expands — So Don’t Force It

Teak is a premium hardwood valued for moisture resistance and durability, but it still expands and contracts slightly with changes in humidity and temperature. A mat that fits too snugly can press against the shower walls and eventually warp or lift. Leaving roughly ¼ to ½ inch of clearance on each side lets your mat “breathe” and keeps it flat and stable over time.

Stays Secure with a Full-Length Gripping Base

Every RV Teak mat features a full-length gripping base that holds firmly to the shower floor. That secure base provides stability underfoot without requiring a tight edge fit. Even slightly undersized mats stay put — so you get safety and comfort without sacrificing drainage and durability.

Pro tip: When measuring, aim for a mat that’s slightly smaller than the shower pan so it’s easy to place and remove, while still allowing water to flow freely.

How to Measure for the Right Size

  • Measure the inside dimensions of the shower pan (not the lip).
  • Subtract about ¼ to ½ inch from both width and depth for a comfortable fit.
  • Check that the mat’s full-length gripping base will contact the pan to ensure stability.

Care & Maintenance

Wipe your teak mat dry after heavy use and allow it to air-dry between trips. Clean periodically with a mild soap and soft brush; avoid harsh cleaners that strip natural oils. Over time, you can maintain the teak’s natural color with teak oil if desired.

Don’t stress if the mat doesn’t touch every corner — it’s intentional. A slightly undersized mat means better airflow, better performance, and a longer-lasting teak mat that keeps your RV shower feeling like a boutique campsite spa.
